This is another one of Finland’s junction stations, where tracks cross in four different directions. It’s an excellent place to start a tour of the country through the railway system.

Four-Direction Junction Station
Joensuu is one of Finland’s junction stations where tracks cross in FOUR DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS, making it an excellent starting point for railway tours throughout the country. This unique configuration provides exceptional connectivity to multiple regions.
Joensuu train station is located specifically at Itaranta 12, 80100 Joensuu. You can use the attached location map to get there more easily.
The railway system has a 3-track freight yard. Track 1 runs trains heading to Pieksämäki. Track 2 is intended for Nurmes, while track 3 goes to Helsinki.
However, we have already mentioned that there are passenger train connections. This includes:
- Joensuu – Lappeenranta – Kouvola – Lahti – Helsinki
- Joensuu – Nurmes
- Joensuu – Pieksämäki
There are night trains from Helsinki to Oulu. There are even high-speed trains on the Karelia railway line, owned by InterCity.

The station features a 3-track freight yard for cargo handling, making Joensuu an important logistics hub in eastern Finland.

No Auto-Train Service
There is currently no auto-train parking service available. If you need this service, you can use large stations such as Helsinki Central Station, or another station that offers this service.

No Exclusive VR Customer Parking Area
Joensuu railway station does not have an exclusive parking area for VR customers. Therefore, you can only use separate parking areas in the immediate vicinity of the station. We provide information about this here. If you are not familiar with Joensuu’s parking rules, you can find them here.

Hallitie parking house is located at Hallitie 2, 80110 Joensuu. It is in the immediate vicinity of Joensuu Science Park, Joensuu Arena, ice hockey halls, sports park, central field, bowling hall and Joensuu Laulurinne. There is a direct walking connection to the Science Park from the parking house. During various events, Hallitie parking house offers good and affordable parking.
The parking house is open Mon-Sun 6:00-22:00. The parking house’s customer service is located at Business Joensuu’s lobby service and is open Mon-Fri 8:00-16:00.
The maximum vehicle height in the parking house is 2.30 m. Trailers and motorcycles are not allowed to park in the parking house.

The railway station currently does not have a locker service. We recommend that you always keep an eye on your belongings and do not leave them unattended.
Assistance Service Available
Train stations strive to be as people-friendly as possible and offer freedom of movement. For this reason, they have high platforms and barrier-free access to low-floor trains.
In addition, you can use the station’s assistance service. It is located at the north end of the station building, right next to the schedule displays. If you are interested in this, consider the following:
- Book at least 36 hours before your departure.
- Call the Accessible Travel Service at 0800 188 822.
- The service is free of charge.
- It operates Monday to Friday from 5:00-22:00. Saturdays and Sundays from 7:00-22:00.
