InterCity Trains
InterCity train is the most commonly used long-distance train, which replaces the old long-distance trains so that there is a recurring connection between Finland’s largest cities and regions. This train is also known as IC, and you will see these abbreviations in timetables and maps referring to this type of train. Speed is up to 200 km/h.
This type of train has become extremely popular because it is a well-connected and easy-to-use train, as there are many connections and departures. It has all the services that a long-distance train offers compared to a regional train. It is much more comfortable, and it has a restaurant and other services that we will see further on.

Long-Distance Train Schedules
InterCity train schedules are available in two formats. In PDF format, which you can view by clicking here, or in real time on VR’s website. The PDF format is very useful to see the scheduled times and departure times of each train from each point and in both directions.
How to identify InterCity trains in schedules:
The only thing you need to look at and make sure you see the schedules in red. These times belong to InterCity trains (IC). The difference is the color of the schedules, and above you can see the IC and the train number of that schedule. For example, IC 941 at 05:28 from Helsinki appears in red.
From this document you will find the schedules of the following InterCity train lines:
Tickets
Tickets are usually purchased through VR’s website or app. You can also go to a station to buy your ticket, but we recommend that you go to central stations, as smaller stations sometimes do not have staff.
Ticket Pricing:
The price varies greatly depending on which route you want to choose. Prices usually vary depending on what time and what day you want to travel. So there is no fixed price for long-distance travel.
However, there is a very interesting option, namely series tickets, which have a fixed price. You can see here the price of the connection between each two stops. Generally you will see the option to buy 10, 30, 50 or even 100 trips at a fixed price valid for 6 months.
💡 Series Tickets: Purchase 10, 30, 50, or 100 trips at a fixed price valid for 6 months!
