Local Trains (Lähijunat) – Complete Guide

Local trains are the most convenient way to travel in different regions of Finland. And such trains are operated by two companies, HSL in the Helsinki area and its surroundings at the border of Vantaa and Espoo. And the rest of the local trains are operated by VR, which also operates medium and long-distance trains.

Local trains differ from other long-distance trains very much, including in terms of prices, as they usually operate in a zone system, in the case of HSL in zones A, B, C and D. In addition, you do not need to reserve a seat or buy a ticket in advance. In addition to the fact that the trains are low-floor and enable easy movement and access for bicycles, strollers or mobility aids. These trains are designed for daily travel and usually last less than 2 hours. Here you will find all the information about how these local trains work and where you can find information from both HSL and VR when you need it.

Schedules

Let’s start with the schedules, which are usually one of the most desired and important points when you want to know when your train departs. Fortunately, schedules for both VR and HSL local trains are available in PDF format. However, both have their own special features, which we will go through here.

And also mention that these schedules are scheduled departures, but sometimes there may be delays or things that affect the running of trains. For this reason, we always recommend checking schedules in real-time before going to the station from VR’s page or HSL’s route planner.

📋 Example VR Schedules

In VR schedules there is one very important aspect, namely that they have both local and long-distance trains. For this, we need to look at the top to see what type of train it is, so we know when it’s a local train and when it’s not. In this case, these are trains with abbreviations D, G, H, M, O, R, T and Z. And the schedule text in black.

How to Identify VR Local Trains:

  • Look for letters: D, G, H, M, O, R, T, Z
  • Schedule text appears in BLACK
  • Example: R 9621 at 5:10 from Helsinki

For example, in the schedule we have added for you to see, there is a local train in Helsinki with the letter R 9621 at 5:10. So when you look at the schedules in this PDF file, you already know which are local train departures and times.

📋 Example HSL Schedules

HSL schedules are very easy and simple to understand. Although there are many different schedules, we recommend using the search option and looking for the railway station from which you want to get on the train. Otherwise, finding the schedule you’re interested in is difficult due to the large number of schedules.

Once you have found the train station, you will see at the top which train lines pass through that station, and below it, what hours, minutes and track each train runs. As you can see in this example of Käpylä station. Where we have lines K, P and T.
