Rovaniemi Railway Station
The capital of the Lapland province also has a railway station, right in Rovaniemi. In fact, the line was extended all the way to Kemijärvi, so the station can operate both regional and long-distance routes.
The building itself has several different spaces, such as restaurants, cafes, a waiting room, toilets, and one of the most striking features: parking, which we’ll discuss in more detail later.

This station has 16 tracks. Long-distance trains from Rovaniemi run with direct connections to places like Kemijärvi, Oulu, Helsinki, Kuopio, and Kokkola, as well as other intermediate cities on each route.
Of these tracks, however, only 3 are in passenger use. The other 13 tracks are parked waiting for commissioning. However, they are used to transport goods coming from or going to Kemijärvi and Salla. These are usually wood.
In addition, ramps have been built for the existing tracks for loading car platforms of VR’s self-service express traffic operating between Rovaniemi and Helsinki.

Auto-Train Service Available
Some Finnish railway stations offer a special service, namely loading vehicles onto the train so that your car can travel with you.
Vehicles are loaded onto the car train right on the east side of the station. They are unloaded upon arrival on the west side. If you plan to use this service, we recommend the following:
- You must arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of loading time
- You must hand over the car keys at least 30 minutes before the car loading time indicated on the ticket
- You must print the ticket and attach it to the keys. On it you can write the owner’s information (name, phone number, departure date, departure station, destination…) and the car itself (model, brand, registration number…)

Luggage Lockers Available
If you want to do something at the station or outside it, such as visit a restaurant, you don’t have to take your luggage with you, but you can use the luggage storage facilities. These are lockers where you store your belongings.
The space may vary depending on the size of your suitcase. The price depends on the latter feature and how long you decide to store your luggage in the locker. Of course, only you have access to the locker.
