Train Tickets – Complete Guide to Finnish Railway Tickets
Train tickets in Finland are divided into two main groups: commuter trains and long-distance trains. Below you’ll find buttons for each of these ticket types with all their information. Since there are quite a few differences, for example in prices, apps, or purchase methods you can use.

In these cases, it’s best to go to each individual guide, as you’ll get more detailed information there than in this more general article about train tickets. The biggest difference is in Helsinki and Helsinki’s commuter train traffic, which is operated by HSL. Unlike long-distance trains and other commuter trains in other regions, which are operated by VR.

HSL vs VR
Helsinki region uses HSL system with different ticketing. Rest of Finland uses VR ticketing system.
Important to Know
The main difference in Finnish train tickets is between Helsinki’s commuter train traffic operated by HSL, and long-distance trains plus other regional commuter trains operated by VR. Make sure you’re buying from the correct provider for your journey!
Changes and Cancellations
You can easily exchange your train ticket in the VR Matka app or on the vr.fi website. If you purchased your ticket through the VR Matka app or logged in to the vr.fi website, you can change your travel schedule directly in the app or online. You can also add your purchased ticket to your VR account in the VR Matka app, even if you weren’t logged in. A self-service activated ticket is considered used and can no longer be exchanged or cancelled.

New Travel Schedule
You can change your travel schedule only during the offer period, at the latest until March 17, 2024. The same rule applies to night trains (excluding trains with sleeping cars), which are on sale until April 14, 2024.
Changing Tickets Through Customer Service
You can also contact our customer service at 0100 3232 (price €0.06/min + mpc/lnc), or exchange your ticket at our service points at Helsinki or Tampere railway stations.

Price Differences When Exchanging Tickets
If you exchange your ticket for a more expensive train, you will be charged the price difference at the time of exchange. When switching to a cheaper ticket, the price difference is not refunded in cash or as a price refund.
Ticket Cancellation
You can cancel your long-distance train ticket by logging in to the vr.fi website or the VR Matka app. You can also fill out a cancellation form. Cancellation protection insurance is not refunded if you cancel your ticket without the cancellation protection insurance you purchased when buying your ticket. The trip must be cancelled before the train’s scheduled departure time.
